Improper cloud configuration caused $5 trillion in losses in 2018-2019

The loss from misconfiguration of cloud platforms for businesses worldwide has been around $5 trillion over the past two years, said DivvyCloud, a provider of security and regulatory compliance products for cloud and container environments.

Moreover, during 2018 and 2019, 33.4 billion records turned out to be unprotected, which is 80% more than in the previous two year period.

In 2020, Cloud Misconfigurations Report DivvyCloud argues that the uptrend will inevitably continue. While moving quickly to cloud services, businesses are not able to implement at least basic security controls, even though providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS) give an opportunity to do so.

According to Brian Johnson, the co-founder and CEO of DivvyCloud, most of the leaks associated with improperly configured cloud computing configurations could have been avoided.

The report analyzes publicly reported incidents related to data leaks and hacks in connection with dubious cloud settings, assuming that the actual amount of damage may be even higher. While in 2018 there were 81 violations detected, in 2019 their number grew up to 115. Companies representing the technology field (41%), healthcare (20%), and government agencies (10%) turned out to be the most vulnerable ones.

ElasticSearch, the open-source search engine, was most often mentioned in terms of service hacking. The number of hacks caused by erroneous ElasticSearch configurations nearly tripled between 2018 and 2019.

Compromised services also included AWS Simple Storage Service (S3) segments, which accounted for 16% of recorded incidents (a decrease in the number in 2019 compared to 2018), and MongoDB, which accounted for 12% of incidents.
